Who are Manchester City Women?

An English club based in Manchester, playing in the Women’s Super League and affiliated with the Premier League men’s team. Manchester City Women were formerly known as Manchester City Ladies.

They were admitted to the Super League for its first season in 2011, a decision that caused controversy at the time because Sunderland’s bid was rejected in their favour.

The club has been among the strongest in England ever since.

What have Manchester City Women won?

Two Super League titles, the most recent in the 2025 to 2026 season, which makes them the current champions.

Only four clubs have ever won the league: Chelsea with eight, Arsenal with three, and Liverpool and Manchester City with two each.

They have also won the Women’s League Cup and the FA Cup multiple times.

Are Manchester City Women the FA Cup holders?

Yes. They beat Brighton & Hove Albion 4-0 in the 2026 final to win their fourth Women’s FA Cup.

Arsenal hold the overall record in that competition with fourteen titles, so City are some way behind, but winning it four times puts them among the leading clubs of the modern era.

Holding the league and the cup at the same time is a domestic double.

Which players do children know?

Several England internationals. Alex Greenwood captains the club and takes its set pieces, Lauren Hemp plays on the wing, and Beth Mead joined after years at Arsenal.

Keira Walsh spent nine seasons at City before moving to Barcelona for a world-record fee, and Chloe Kelly won the FA Cup and League Cup there.

That is an unusually high number of recognisable names for a child to spot.

Why did their rapid rise cause arguments?

Because of how they entered the league. City’s acceptance into the inaugural Super League ahead of Sunderland, a club with a longer record in the women’s game, was widely criticised.

Many of Sunderland’s players left as a result, and the decision is still cited as having set back the women’s game in the north east.

It is a reasonable thing for an older child to think about: leagues are built by decisions, not just by results.
